Harriet McKinley-Smith is a PhD student in English and French Literature at Jesus College, Oxford University. She holds a scholarship from the AHRC Open-Oxford-Cambridge Doctoral Training Partnership, the Clarendon Fund and Jesus College. In addition to her PhD research, she works closely with the Wordsworth Trust to help them to curate exhibits, organise events and outreach programs with local schools.

Prior to commencing her PhD, she achieved a first-class degree in English Literature at Royal Holloway, University of London. She then completed her master’s degree in Modern Languages (English, French and German) at the University of Oxford where she was awarded the Jesus College Postgraduate Humanities Scholarship and achieved a Distinction. Harriet has worked on the undergraduate admissions team at Oxford and has helped to interview many prospective students.

She is an experienced tutor and university application coach. Her students have achieved places at top schools and universities throughout the UK and abroad including Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and King’s. Harriet’s students have gone on to study Law, Medicine, English, History and PPE among other subjects. She has helped other students to gain places at schools such as Headington School, Manchester Grammar School and Magdalen College School. She is open to inquiries about individual school and university application support.


Miss McKinley-Smith has been tutoring GCSE English and Creative Writing for OE.

About the course

This course is designed to give students a clear guide to what to expect from the university application process. It is open to students from all subjects, and they will be given a tailored programme dependent on their needs and how far along they are in the application process.

The first session on 1st August will be an introduction to the course. We will discuss interview technique in the first hour and personal statement writing in the second. Then on 19th - 21st August, we will have an in-depth course over three days. This process will be a detailed guide to what to expect from an interview, we will spend time looking at the admissions tests for their courses and then we will discuss personal statement writing and Miss McKinley-Smith will look at each student’s work individually. Topics we will discuss include how to stand out in your personal statement, body language for interviews, Oxbridge colleges, how to apply for scholarships, how to choose the right university and much more.
